A number of signaling pathways has evolved from the earliest stages of metazoan evolution to establish body axes and tissue types. One of these pathways is the Wnt signaling system.

The Wnt signaling pathway is involved in many events during embryogenesis, stem cell maintenance, differentiation and axon guidance. This pathway is sensitive to any molecular alterations as Wnt signaling is tightly regulated on multiple cellular levels. Malfunctions in the Wnt signaling pathway lead to severe neurological diseases and cancer.
