Autophagy

Autophagy is a lysosomal degradation pathway for proteins and organelles that is essential for survival during nutrient starvation, cell growth, differentiation, development and homeostasis. It is a highly regulated process to maintain a balance between synthesis, degradation and recycling of cellular components. The most well-known mechanism of autophagy involves the formation of a membrane around a targeted region of the cell membrane. The resultant vesicle then fuses with a lysosome and leads to the degradation of its contents.

In principle autophagy provides an adaptive role to protect organisms against diverse pathologies, including cancer, neurodegeneration, bacterial and viral infections, aging and heart disease. However, malfuction of autophagy may actually contribute to the development of a desease.
